Cooper is a sly actor, he totally steps aside and lets the real talent shine, John Ortiz (underrated) and Jennifer Lawrence feed off him. In my novice estimation, an actor’s performance goes up a notch when he or she shuts up and lets the scene come to them. Cooper does this over and over.
In the end, the brother and sister played by Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan in the searing but warmly realistic ‘Shame’, are so clearly ruined that it is hard to imagine a pain they have not endured. But what? I don’t care what it was, to be honest. Perhaps this incident was so horrendous that nothing they ever do, good or bad, will match that moment.
Mr. Strauss has gone through a fairly traumatic event, and since it happened early in his life, he’s had time to process, and maybe figure out a way to deal with it. He killed someone. It was an accident, and it couldn’t be helped. The writing here is crisp, sharp, cliché-free, and brutally honest. It reminded me of the Stewart O’Nan novel Songs for the Missing. By the end of Half A Life you realize you’re reading something that really happened, and it’s true, which makes it all the more potent.

In both book and movie, an autocratic Sicilian prince is confronted with radical social and political change. He recognizes that he must either adapt or watch the spectacle of his dynasty being overwhelmed. There is a very great lesson in conservative values here and the necessity of adapting them to changing times while still remaining true to tradition.
