Ms. Ringwald perfectly inhabits these characters with a kind of romantic oily magic that dips into melodrama but quickly emerges with sinister plans. I was convinced that Phillip was cheating on Greta, because he just can’t take the process of conceiving another child. Because it’s less about them, and more about the science, and at some point it becomes too difficult to endure.
Way down below but slowing coming into fine detail is the entrance to a building crowded with limos. Throngs of glamorous people are crowding the doors. It looks like Truman Capote giving one of those parties. All her life, Marta has dreamed of belonging, and that’s where she wants to belong…even if she’s had to leap for it.
I find the literature of Joan Wickersham emotionally involving, inevitably intelligent and with a flair for the best kind of drama, which is the drama between complexly realized people who find despite their best intentions, that their instincts and passions don’t mesh. Wickersham writes that we choose in rapture and ignorance, which her stories light up, as if we were peering into an illuminating tube, our vision diverted into glittering angles.
When I read “Expectations”, the first story in the collection, We’re Flying, I was surprised to discover that I was reading a tightly told tale of erotic bliss. I’ve heard so much about this collection, its no wonder PW gave it a starred review. It’s not that this was soft porn, or some odd tale of a person telling a friend about his or her sexual hopes, dreams and desires. It was Peter Stamm telling me of someone who is desperate with loneliness and broken by longing.
