Can you blame a debut author for writing a book with the intention of continuing his story in another book? Reading Peter Swanson’s book The Girl with a Clock for a Heart makes you wonder if this crossed the author’s mind. The book’s rights have already been sold to Hollywood. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. Just wondering.
I’ve ranted enough so now to the review.
This book has 289 pages and you better not plan on going anywhere once you pick up this book. So if you read a page a minute than please plan your day accordingly. The book opens with a sort of sad sack character named George Foss who lives in the Boston area and does not really have much going for him. He has a friend named Irene who he’s very friendly with if you know what I mean. They walk into their favorite bar and George swears he sees a woman from his past. He gets rid of Irene quickly and then goes back to the bar and speaks to her. This is when you want to scream “George, please don’t do it. Isn’t your life crappy enough!” But as we all know love makes you stupid.
Here, The book goes into overdrive and the story unfolds in a back and forth fashion where we are briskly told what happened to get us to this point in the story. It continues in this fashion for the remainder of the book and as you’re reading you keep wondering how could George be this naive. We meet a cast of characters that look like they were plucked from central casting but entertaining none-the-less.
The ending screams sequel but as I said before, can you really blame the author when you have a character that you’re not ready to literally dump into the ocean with a cement block or are you?
We’ll certainly know soon enough when we see what happens with the movie. Welcome to show biz!
