After I read David Gilbert’s “Member Guest” in the New Yorker a few weeks ago, I began to pine for a copy of & Sons, the forthcoming novel that I believe the story is taken from. His first two books, the collection Remote Feed and novel The Normals, are brilliant pieces of writing.
I’m still waiting for my review copy of That’s Not a Feeling, by Dan Josefson, Soho Press, but I wanted to bring to your attention a few things that you might miss. Snapper by Brian Kimberling, Pantheon, April 2013, an amazing package, quirky story about a birdwatcher. Mike McCormack has a new novel, Notes From A Coma, also from Soho Press, coming in March of 2013. McCormack’s first two novels, Crowe’s Requiem and Getting it in the Head were blistering reads. I just came across another collection of stories, Amidst Traffic, from newcomer Michel Sauret. This is self-published, ambitious, and slick. Check it out if you can. The fine folks at Vintage sent along a copy of Philida, (Booker Prize Finalist) by Andre Brink, on sale February ‘13. I’m not sure if I will get to it, but I will try. Eli Thorpe has a debut collection, The Weight of Deeds, which seems to me like a collection of Edgar Allen Poe inspired tales of love gone wrong. The Terror Factory: Inside the FBI’s Manufactured War on Terrorism, from Ig publishing is on-sale next month.
On sale now, Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness, by Susannah Cahalan, Free Press. I met the author recently, and she was very convincing, to say the least. This is the first piece of non-fiction that I’ve wanted to read, really wanted to. And finally, Jim Crace has a new novel, Harvest, on sale February ‘13 from Nan A. Talese. This guy seems to be writing so quickly that it’s hard to keep up.
Thanks for listing “Amidst Traffic” on here!
